Midsummer night song (Pieśń sobótkowa)
Saint Nicholas Orchestra (in Polish: Orkiestra św. Mikołaja) is one of the oldest and best known, if not the oldest and best known folk band in Poland. It was founded in 1988 when there was no interest in Polish traditional folk music, and since then it has been said to have "invented folk music in Poland". Playing songs of Lemko Ruthenians who had once lived in eastern Polish Carpathians, they discovered that music from old villages can be found fashionable and intriguing by a modern listener.
Saint Nicholas Orchestra's sound cannot be compared to anything else, although the listener can catch echoes of influence of folk music from different parts of the world, as well as rock and jazz. The band likes to play with their tunes, often building complex trance and progressive arrangements. In spite of their creative approach to folk music, the band stresses: "we not aim to modernise the folk source, but rather to create its continuation on the basis of both the contemporary world and our knowledge and sensitivity to tradition developed by us while exploring the folk culture. It is our own tale of the world that has faded away but is still extremely significant for us."
Saint Nicholas Orchestra has released 11 albums, including one double album. They can be purchased via the shop on the band's website. The band regularly performs not only in Poland but also outside its borders. Its performances, full of energy and adventure, often turn coincidental listeners into passionate folk music fans. Every December, the band hosts Poland's biggest and oldest folk festival, Mikołajki Folkowe, at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
