Listening to Ceilí Moss, you might think this must be a folk band from somewhere in the West of Ireland, one of those bands that play regularly in little and bigger pubs along the coast, entertaining the tourists and locals alike and giving everyone memories of special evenings. Well - this band is not from Ireland but from Belgium!
Talking about their history, Ceilí Moss explain that like many bands, they had started with the "Drunken Danny rover of the County Down in the jar" songbook, but with time their sound developed, embracing and merging influences from many countries and styles of music.
Ceilí Moss have existed already for 14 years. The current lineup is: Laurent "Pollux" Leemans (vocals, guitar, autoharp, percussions, lyrics - has been in the band since the beginning), Stéphane Jalhay (guitar, mandoline, banjo), Matthieu "stork" Collard (fiddle), Thibaud Misson (double bass), Jérémy Pinera (drums, percussions) and Yves Van Elst (transverse flute, bagpipe). The band has released four albums, which are available on CDBaby. The latest one, La Vie Sent Quoi?, released last year, has already received a number of very favourable reviews. Laurent Leemans also released a solo album last year. They play regularly in Belgium and sometimes also abroad.
And what does the name of the band mean? As they explain, "Ceilí" (pronounced as Kylie) is a Gaelic word for a party with music, and Moss was the nickname of Alain Mossiat, the boss of the pub L'Eblouissant where the band first learnt to cope with stage fright.
