Support New Folk/Pop Record by Award-Winning Songwriter Katey Laurel
Hello and thank you for checking out my Kickstarter here on TalentCast! I hope you'll join me for all the "behind-the-scenes."
I am currently offering thank you packages/pre-orders of my next record for a variety of levels of support starting from $1.
Thank you for considering helping an independent artist along on her journey!
New voting rules and voting times, starting January 11
On January the 11th the voting page will change. From that day you will not have to log in any more to cast your vote for your favourite artist.
We have two reasons to change the rules:
1. Artists who are new on TalentCast do not have equal chances to win the voting. Artists who have been already played for a long time more easily get votes from our members and too often the same artists win. Artists can now more easily encourage their fans to vote, because the rules are going to be very simple: Everybody can vote once per voting round and per IP address without logging in.
2. The number of votes was going down. We hope more listeners will now be willing to vote.
The voting times will also change:
Every voting round will start on Friday at 17:00 (CET)
Every voting round will end on Tuesday at 00:00 (
CD Update & Thanks for Voting
Thanks to all who listened to TalentCast last week and voted for my song "I'm Without You". I was so busy in the studio (also with my job and family too) that I barely mentioned to anyone that my song was on the playlist. It was a surprise to me that it won but I want you all to know that I'm honoured and humbled... Thanks again.
For those of you who do not know the technical history of this song, it was my first attempt at multi-track recording. I recorded it simply as an experiment, long before I had any plans to sign up as an artist on SellaBand and before I knew about TalentCast. I realize now how how inferior that recording actually is, but once I got involved in SellaBand and TalentCast, it was the best I had to offer at that time.
I recorded it in my living room, over several months, using inexpensive stage mics and an RP-250 guitar processor for the effects. The recording system I used was Sony's Acid Music Studio-7 loaded into my PC. I learned how to use the program as I went. I played all the instruments, except for a portion of the bass guitar, some of which was played by Bill Patterson. Using Studio 7's built-in drum samples, I constructed the drum patterns, stroke by stroke so that it would not be a repetitive loop. I suppose the recording is acceptable, but the part that is a big negative, in my opinion, is the 'harsh" sounding midi-synthesized strings.
The storyline is based on true events in my own life. The person I am singing about is my wife. We were living in Halifax, Nova Scotia and I had to work over the Chrismas holidays, so my wife and 2 year old daughter decided to go 4000 miles away, home to British Columbia for 2 weeks, over the Christmas period. We were new to Nova Scotia and had no friends there yet, so it was not the most fun time for me. I decided to go out for dinner one night and the song was created that night. Now you know the story.
The good news technically is that this song is being re-recorded from scratch, by a professional producer; Rob Begg of Marpole Productions (Twitter: @MarpoleRecords). I am happy to say that Rob Begg has forgotten more about music and production than I will ever know, so the new "I'm Without You" should sound incredible. Then, I'll ask TalentCast to throw the old one away and spare your ears any strain.
On another note, the studio work is progressing at a very fast pace now. After a difficult year of several unrelated but serious set-backs, Rob Begg and I have been achieving a great deal. I am actually losing a little sleep now, simply because I can feel the excitement building.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to founding member and the voice of TalentCast; Johan Jongerius, for putting so much of his time, hard work and passion into this show and for being a stellar supporter of so many musicians and their fans. Thank-you Johan!
... and if you were wondering?... Yes, my wife and I are still marr
The Return Of The Space Turkeys
I have just uploaded my song "The Return of the Space Turkeys" and wonder what will happen next: Will there be a rush of people who want to buy my CD from CDBaby or maybe download some or all songs from it there? Or will I drown in a flood of music?
Anyway the melody of the song is played on a small version of the Finnish National Instrument, the 5-string kantele, and accompanied by a real cello played by Minna Väätänen, and drums sampled from a Roland TR-606 I once owned but sold after sampling it. The snare was sampled by miking my Fender guitar amp, so there's some spring reverb on it, and the bass drum was sampled by miking my Roland Bass Cube, putting a dynammic mic into the reflex tube...

I don't say it often enough, but here is a big thank you to all the folks at TalentCast. It's a wonderful thing you do and I appreciate it very much. Every week I scan eagerly through the playlist and am frequently delighted to see not one familiar name. Why am I delighted? Because I have an hour of discoveries ahead; often delightful and, yes, sometimes irritating. But this is how we learn and grow, yes? Have a marvelous summer. I'll miss you until September - just not the German death metal.
